Patently Apple, reveals composite details of Apple's versatile designs for implementing 3-D imaging on both video and still shots on the iPhone. The patent includes includes various technologies, such as micro lenses, infrared reflection, and LIDAR sensors improving depth perception and handling of polarized light.
Interestingly, the patent states that 3-D imaging can also be applied to facial and gesture recognition, including smiling, grimacing, etc., using surface geometry data of facial muscles.
3-D is always a very polarizing thing so let’s hope that if Apple does, in fact, ever introduce it into its devices, they keep to their usual standards.
