Orlando Threatened To Trade Dwight To LA

All the questions and speculations if Dwight would still be in a Magic uniform for the rest of the season ended on March 14. Orlando's front office was tired of playing checkers and brought out the chess strategies, they threatened to deal him to the Lakers. Just like in any relationship when you're playing hard to get Howard was hit with an ultimatum.

Howard had his sights set on New Jersey, in a trade that would've sent Brook Lopez, MarShon Brooks, Mehmet Okur and two first-round picks. But the Magics bluffed that deal and pursued the Laker deal for Andrew Bynum, Steve Blake, and Devin Ebanks. Which Dwight turned downed and opted to stay with the team he drafted, calling it "loyalty"

iPhone users: Android is ruining our Instagram club

Since Instagram became available for Android users yesterday, a lobby of "but that was OUR app!" tweets are starkly highlighting the rift between iPhoners and Androiders.

Vocal iOS fans are unhappy that Instagram is no longer exclusive to them. Suddenly, their club is letting Android users in! How could it be?

The allure of exclusivity is understandable. As a Droid Incredible owner who sat on the sidelines as the Instagram app became increasingly popular, I felt a pang of jealousy and longing whenever I looked at my iPhone-owning friends' beautifully saturated pictures. I can only imagine that they felt a similar little pang of satisfaction knowing their pictures were "special" in that they weren't replicable by everyone.

--------------------------
Instagram went from a gated community to section 8 all in 1 day.
— Joel (@joelby1328) April 4, 2012
--------------------------

In some ways, this reminds me of my junior year of high school, when I'd fallen in with a group of cool alternative kids. It was so exciting! Their tastes were so...cultivated! They introduced me to this awesome new band that sang this sad, beautiful song, "Yellow." Oh, how we loved it. We sat on the subway, each listening to it on our separate Walkmans (this was right before the iPod came out), and it was our music. It got us.

Then suddenly, Coldplay took off and my friends were disgusted that "Yellow" was being piped through the speakers at Barnes & Noble! Ew! Now EVERYONE could listen to it? At that point, it was taboo for me to like it.

But for the most part, that's just cultural elitism; it's annoying and off-putting, but not especially harmful.

However, the Instagram-on-Android outrage has taken on an insidious undertone. This tweet, sent in reaction to the uproar, captures it well.

-------------------------------
Someone needs to cover the overtly racist reaction of more than a few @Instagram users to Android joining their club.
— ashwin (@ashwindeshmukh) April 4, 2012
-------------------------------

Read through a few of the "Eww, Android users in my Instagram feed!" tweets, and there's no denying the response is classist. The use of the term "Section 8" is undeniably so. That the underlying[..]umption there is wrong doesn't seem to matter.

Choosing which smartphone to buy is a profoundly "first-world" problem. Anyone with a smartphone is paying a huge monthly data rate; to accuse Android users as a whole of government-assistance-level poverty is ridiculous, and potentially hurtful. Even more so because there may in fact be a real -- albeit slight -- difference in the average incomes of Android and iPhones users.

Consider this Hunch survey that Buzzfeed points out, which suggests that though Android users are in no socioeconomic way "poor," they may be less likely than iPhone users to be "rich," if we define rich as making more than $200,000 a year.

Really, people? An app is bringing out the disdain of the "haves" to the "maybe-have-a-little-lesses"?

--------------------------------------
Instagram just went from a Country Club, to a club in the country all in one day!
— 2 M's (@MelleMontana) April 3, 2012
--------------------------------------

References to people not being allowed into country clubs hits home with me as an American Jew. And though the iOS/Android rift is obviously nowhere near as destructive or serious as that exclusion, the similarities bear noticing. These iOS users are upset that Android users are suddenly joining them inside the cool, wonderful walls of Instagram, presumably not because they think the iPhone is better than Android phones, but because they think iPhone owners are somehow superior to Android owners.

And that's the most remarkable takeaway of this phenomenon, I think: that which smartphone we own has begun to inform our identities. In our gadget-filled lives, our phones have become another way for us to organize ourselves into separate groups, to label each other as "other" and "apart." Our tech has come to define us.

Is it naive of me to point out that all we smartphone-toters are basically the same? We use our phones to text, get on the Web, check Facebook, take pictures, find our way to new locations, get out of awkward situations. Maybe it is naive to point it out, but I'm going to anyway.

Let's just all get along, guys, and share pictures of beautiful sunsets.

Calipari Says He wants to Coach Undefeated

NEW ORLEANS—It probably was inevitable, though a good deal premature, that someone would ask Kentucky center Anthony Davis about his impending decision regarding the NBA draft with this NCAA championship barely a half-hour old. He gave an intriguing answer, though.

He said, “We have until April 29 to decide.”
That is the NBA’s deadline for college underclassmen to enter the draft. It is not the ridiculous deadline the NCAA has imposed, after which any player who files for the draft will not be permitted to return to the college game.
The disparity is explained thusly: UK coach John Calipari won’t force his players to decide by the April 10 NCAA deadline. He’ll allow them the luxury and comfort of the extra time.
“They’re not going to be pressured by me or anyone else,” Calipari told The Louisville Courier-Journal. “I’m not worried about the NCAA deadline. It means nothing to me or those players.

Kentucky almost certainly will be reconstructing its program from scratch ahead of the 2012-13 season, but it will do so on its own terms, its own timetable—and quite possibly with an awesome collection of talent.

NBA Selling Ad Space on Jerseys?

We all know that the lockout caused the league to lose millions of dollars in revenue, but who knew they would stoop to this level and become corporatized.  According to Sports Business Journal, NBA owners will debate the idea in an April 12th  meeting in New York. It marks their first board of governors meeting since the labor dispute last fall.

Selling ad space would be beneficial for the NBA, it would allow them to spread the revenue throughout the league. The teams would be able to pay their players, essentially leading to upgrading of the teams

But the concept of this is still questionable. The lockout was help small-market teams fight against the more larger markets from being coming a monopoly, hence the Lebron James and Dan Gilbert situation.

Although selling ad space on jersey will be monetarily beneficial, it could possibly distance the fans from the league even more.  Even though the money would be helping franchises, stitching ads on jersey will add engulfing commercialism consumers have to put up with every day.

We as fans are already sick and tired of the NBA uber-richness. We are the ones supporting the league because we loved the game, they don't want to be constantly blitzed by advertisements.

If this continues players like Russel Westbrook; after slamming a thunderous dunk mimics ripping his jersey name off. It will be instead an advertisement where his team used to be.

Geraldo Rivera Apologizes To Trayvon Martin's Parents

During a six-minute interview with Trayvon Martin’sparents on Geraldo At Large, Rivera apologized toTracy Martin and Sybrina Fulton. This time around, Rivera sounded sincere, saying, “Please—this is the first time I've spoken to you—accept my condolences for your awful loss.”
After Martin’s parents thanked Rivera, he attempted to explain his “hoodie” comments:“What I was trying to do was caution parents that allowing kids to wear hoodies or similar clothing in certain circumstances, particularly if they were minority young men, could be dangerous," Rivera explained. "But I never intended to hurt anyone’s feelings, and certainly Sybrina and Tracy, I never intended to hurt your feelings. I want to personally convey my deepest apologies to both of you. I am sorry, Tracy, if anything I said added to your misery.”
Tracy Martin thanked Rivera, and then offered his own take on his remarks and the situation:“Your apology is accepted," Martin said. "Let me just add one thing with the wearing of the hoodie. I don’t think America knows that, in fact, at the time of the incident when he initially made the call, it was raining. So Trayvon had every right to have on his hood. He was protecting himself from the rain. So if being suspicious, walking in the rain with your hoodie on is a crime, then I guess the world is doing something wrong.”

Social Network Let's Student Borrow Money From School

If you’re looking for cash for school, then you may not have to look any further than your fellow alumni. Meet SoFi, a social lending service that lets alumni of a school help finance the education of future graduates and earn a bit of a return on their investment as well.
The way the program works is simple. Alumni invest money in their particular school’s funding, and then students apply just as they might to any other college loan. Loans are given to students for a 6.24% interest rate (5.99% if they sign up for auto-pay), alumni earn 5% back on money they’ve invested, and SoFi keeps roughly 1%. Alumni can invest with cash, or can invest funds through their IRA.
“The student loan market is broken” Dan Macklin, Co-founder and VP of Business Development at SoFi
toldMashable. “Students have very little choice on where to get their loans from. Why can’t we use the social groups that are out there and lend between those groups?”
In addition to lending SoFi also creates a social network for each school where alumni can see the students they’re helping finance, as well as check out what classes those students are taking and what their ultimate career goals are. Likewise, students can learn more about who’s lending them cash, and potentially call upon those alumni for advice on things like internships or to get help on a project.

Future Iphone May Have 3D

Patently Apple, reveals composite details of Apple's versatile designs for implementing 3-D imaging on both video and still shots on the iPhone. The patent includes includes various technologies, such as micro lenses, infrared reflection, and LIDAR sensors improving depth perception and handling of polarized light.
Interestingly, the patent states that 3-D imaging can also be applied to facial and gesture recognition, including smiling, grimacing, etc., using surface geometry data of facial muscles.
3-D is always a very polarizing thing so let’s hope that if Apple does, in fact, ever introduce it into its devices, they keep to their usual standards.
